Locker Room Furniture for Workplaces, Schools and Sports Centres: How to Choose the Right Solution

In any place where people arrive from outside and change their clothes – whether it’s a factory, an office, a school, a gym or a municipal building – the cloakroom area is rarely the first thing considered when planning a space. Yet this small, often “secondary” part of the building affects, every single day, how organised, hygienic and safe the whole facility is. Quality locker room furniture is not a luxury – it is an investment in order, employee comfort and long-term running costs.

Why locker room furniture matters more than it seems at first glance?

Picture a typical start to the working day at a manufacturing plant or sports club: dozens of people arrive at once, take off their outdoor clothing and shoes, change into their work or training gear, and head off to their duties or their workout.

If the cloakroom area doesn’t have enough lockable lockers at this point, clothes end up piled on chairs, windowsills or the floor – creating not just visual clutter but real risks: clothes getting mixed up, items going missing, wet shoes coming into contact with clean clothing, and people tripping or catching themselves on scattered belongings.

Quality lockers solve these problems on several levels at once:

Order and organisation. Every employee, pupil or visitor has their own clearly defined place to store their belongings. This reduces conflicts, speeds up the changing process and keeps the space looking tidy – which matters especially in areas visible to clients or visitors.

Hygiene. In a closed, ventilated locker, clothes and shoes dry out and air far better than on open shelving or rows of hooks. Models that let you separate clean and dirty clothing (for example, work clothes from street clothes) are particularly important in sectors with strict occupational health and sanitary requirements – food production, healthcare, the chemical industry.

Security. Lockable lockers protect personal belongings, documents, mobile phones and other valuables from being lost or stolen. In public institutions and schools, this is a direct way of reducing disputes and building trust in the environment.

Employee comfort. Often underrated but very real – someone who knows their belongings are safe and in an orderly place feels more comfortable and worries less during the working day. Ergonomic solutions with a bench to sit on while changing shoes further improve the everyday experience, particularly for older employees or people with limited mobility.

Flexibility in space planning. Modular locker systems let you tailor the solution precisely to the floor area and number of users – from a single small locker in an office to dozens of sections in a large plant or sports complex.

VVN (“Everything for Shops and Warehouses”) has, over years of experience, built up a wide range of locker room furniture covering both base-mounted and leg-mounted lockers, as well as accessories – benches, coat racks and other solutions. Let’s look at each of the main product types in more detail, to help you choose the option best suited to your situation.

Base-mounted lockers (VVN WLB1–WLB7)

Lockers that are fitted directly onto the floor are one of the most common and well-proven solutions for workplaces, schools, sports clubs and public institutions. This type of construction provides maximum stability and is particularly well suited to heavily used spaces, where lockers are used intensively every day.

Construction and materials

The base-mounted lockers offered by VVN are made from powder-coated steel sheet ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 mm in thickness, depending on the specific part and the load it’s subjected to. This range of material thickness achieves an optimal balance between durability, weight and price: load-bearing parts are more rigid, while doors and less-loaded surfaces can be slightly thinner without losing functionality.

The standard body colour is light grey (RAL 7035), which is universal and suits any interior style. For an additional charge, doors can also be ordered in blue (RAL 5010 or RAL 5012) or red (RAL 3005) – a practical option if you need to visually distinguish between different user groups, departments or zones.

Range of models

The VVN range includes seven base-mounted locker models, which differ in width and number of compartments:

Models WLB5, WLB6 and WLB7 differ from the others in that each compartment is divided vertically into two sections – this makes it possible to store clean and dirty clothing separately within the same locker, which is particularly useful in manufacturing companies, the food industry and other settings where higher hygiene standards must be met.

Integrated bench and ergonomics

One of the key advantages valued by buyers of base-mounted lockers is the option to pair them with an integrated bench. The bench is made from a welded metal frame with a varnished solid pine seat – making it both durable and pleasant to use. For example, the bench available for the VVN WLB1 model is 300 mm wide, 745 mm deep and 400 mm high, while for wider models such as the WLB4, the bench depth is somewhat smaller – 650 mm. It’s worth noting that the bench is not included as standard and must be ordered separately, letting the customer decide for themselves whether it’s needed for their particular space.

This solution significantly improves ergonomics in confined changing areas – no one needs to crouch or balance on one leg while changing shoes, which reduces the risk of tripping and makes the daily routine more comfortable, especially at times of heavier use, when several people are changing at once.

Ventilation and interior fittings

Each door is fitted with two ventilation openings that provide natural air exchange inside the locker – this is especially important when storing damp or sweaty clothing, since insufficient ventilation can cause unpleasant odours and even a risk of mould. Each compartment is fitted with a top shelf for hats and other small items, as well as a tubular clothes rail (18 mm diameter) with hooks for hanging garments. Doors are secured with a cylinder lock, and two keys are included – one for everyday use and one as a spare.

Applications

Base-mounted lockers are a versatile solution, equally well suited to manufacturing plants, warehouses, sports clubs, educational institutions and municipal buildings. Their stable construction makes them the first choice for locations where longevity and resistance to intensive, everyday use matter – for example, factories with shift work, where lockers are opened and closed hundreds of times a day.

Leg-mounted lockers (VVN WLL1–WLL7)

The second widely used solution is lockers that stand on separate legs rather than being fitted directly to a base. This design offers several practical advantages that are particularly valued in facilities where easy long-term cleaning and maintenance matter.

Advantages compared with base-mounted lockers

The most important difference is that there is free space between the bottom of the locker and the floor. This means that:

  • Cleaning becomes considerably simpler – a floor-washing machine or a mop can be run freely underneath the locker without lifting or moving the unit itself. This is essential in places with high hygiene requirements, such as sports halls, medical facilities or food production plants.
  • Air circulation improves at the base of the locker, complementing the ventilation built into the doors and helping damp shoes or clothing dry faster, reducing unpleasant odours and the risk of moisture build-up.
  • Dirt is easier to spot and remove – dust and debris accumulating under the locker are visible and accessible, rather than hidden beneath a sealed base.

Range of models and dimensions

Like the base-mounted lockers, the leg-mounted lockers in the VVN range are also available in seven models, with an identical width and compartment-number logic, but with a somewhat greater overall height due to the addition of legs:

The smallest option, the VVN WLL1 (300 mm wide), is designed for a single user, while the largest standard model, the VVN WLL4 (1200 mm wide, four compartments), provides space for four people at once in a single unit – a practical solution when a large number of lockers need to fit into a limited floor area.

As with the base-mounted lockers, models WLL5, WLL6 and WLL7 offer additional functionality here too – each compartment is divided vertically into two sections, allowing clean and dirty clothing to be stored separately within the same locker, without spending extra space or money on a second, separate unit.

Manufacturer and quality

These lockers are manufactured by the Polish company Malow – a well-established metal furniture manufacturer specialising specifically in locker and warehouse equipment for the European market. Working with a certified manufacturer ensures that the steel used is properly treated for corrosion resistance, while the powder-coated finish guarantees a durable, easy-to-clean surface over the long term.

As with the base-mounted lockers, the material thickness is 0.5–1.2 mm steel sheet. The standard finish is light grey (RAL 7035), with the option to order doors in blue (RAL 5010/5012) or red (RAL 3005).

Interior fittings and security

The interior layout is identical to that of the base-mounted lockers – each compartment has a shelf for hats, a tubular clothes rail (18 mm diameter) with hooks, and a cylinder lock with two keys included. A levelling feature is also available, allowing the unit to be installed precisely even on a slightly uneven floor – important for keeping an entire row of lockers looking even and tidy, and for ensuring the doors close without issues.

Applications

Leg-mounted lockers are particularly well suited to sports halls and fitness centres, where frequent, thorough floor cleaning matters, as well as to medical and food-industry businesses with higher sanitary standards. They are also widely used in educational institutions for pupils and students, and in any work environment where straightforward long-term maintenance of the space is important.

Lockers and stands with benches

The third important product group in the VVN range consists of solutions with an integrated or attachable bench – both as an accessory for base-mounted lockers and as standalone cloakroom stands with a seat and hooks.

Why a bench is more than just a matter of comfort?

At first glance, a bench might seem like just an extra comfort feature, but in practice it has a significant effect on employee safety and everyday experience. In places where people arrive in outdoor shoes and change into work or sports footwear, the absence of a bench means people have to crouch, balance on one leg, or use unsuitable surfaces (such as windowsills or boxes) – raising the risk of trips and injuries, especially during busy periods, and among older people or those with reduced mobility.

A bench also structures the flow of movement in a changing room – people sit down in a defined, designated spot rather than spreading out across the whole space, which is especially valuable in confined areas where several people are changing at the same time.

Materials and construction

The benches offered by VVN are made from a welded metal frame with a varnished solid pine seat. In some cloakroom stand solutions, the seat itself may instead be made from solid wood slats or moisture-resistant plywood at least 2.5 cm thick – providing sufficient resistance to everyday loads and to the moisture typical of changing room environments. The metal base is welded to the stand’s frame, and for wall-mounted solutions, all the necessary fixing screws are included.

Configurations

VVN offers several bench configurations depending on the needs of the space:

  • Integrated bench for base-mounted lockers – matched to the width of the specific locker model (for example, a 300 mm wide bench for the WLB1 model, or a 1200 mm wide bench for the WLB4 model), creating a visually and functionally unified solution.
  • Standalone cloakroom stands with bench and hooks – a solution for spaces where a full lockable locker isn’t needed, but an organised place to hang clothes and somewhere to sit is important. Such stands usually also include a fixed, welded-on or mounted shelf for shoes or hats that cannot be removed by hand – preventing accidental damage or loss.
  • Wall-mounted solutions – suited to narrow changing rooms, where it’s important not to lose floor space to free-standing furniture.

Who this solution is particularly suited to?

Bench equipment is a valuable addition anywhere people regularly change their shoes or outdoor clothing – schools, kindergartens, sports clubs, swimming pools, plants with workwear requirements, and offices with shower facilities. Over the long term, this small investment pays for itself through a reduced risk of injury and a more positive experience for employees or visitors.

How to choose the right locker solution?

Given how wide the range of available models and configurations is, it’s natural to ask – how do you choose the solution that will best suit your space and needs? Below are the key factors to consider when planning a cloakroom area.

  1. Number of users and intensity of use. First, determine how many people will use the changing room at once, and how often. A large, heavily used plant with shift work is better suited to sturdy base-mounted lockers, which withstand frequent, everyday use. A small office or consultation centre with a few dozen users a day may manage with more compact solutions.
  2. Features of the space. If the changing room is narrow or an irregular shape, it’s worth considering the possibilities of modular systems – combining lockers of different widths (300, 400, 600, 800, 900 or 1200 mm) lets you precisely “fill” the available wall length without unnecessary gaps or compromises. In rooms with low ceilings, make sure the height of your chosen model (1800 mm for base-mounted lockers or 1940 mm for leg-mounted lockers) fits within the available room height, leaving space above the locker as well.
  3. Cleaning and hygiene requirements. If the space is cleaned using floor-washing equipment, or has higher sanitary requirements (sports halls, medical facilities, food production), leg-mounted lockers are the more practical choice – the free space underneath significantly speeds up and simplifies cleaning. In places where maximum stability and straightforward installation matter more, base-mounted lockers are the better fit.
  4. Separating clean and dirty clothing. If the nature of the work requires separating workwear from street clothes (for example, in manufacturing, construction or healthcare), it’s worth choosing models with vertically divided compartments – VVN WLB5, WLB6, WLB7 for base-mounted lockers, or VVN WLL5, WLL6, WLL7 for leg-mounted lockers. This solution achieves the hygiene goal without needing to buy additional lockers.
  5. Colour and visual identity. The standard light grey colour (RAL 7035) is universal and suits any environment, but ordering doors in blue (RAL 5010 or 5012) or red (RAL 3005) lets you visually distinguish user groups, departments or teams – practically useful in large facilities with several changing areas, or in educational institutions, where different colours can denote different classes or age groups.
  6. Locking system. The standard package includes a cylinder lock with two keys per locker, but in larger facilities it’s worth considering additional options – multi-point locks for extra security, or master-key systems that let administrators access all lockers with a single master key, while each user keeps their own individual key.
  7. Whether a bench is needed. Assess whether there’s enough room in the space for a bench, and whether it’s functionally necessary – for example, in sports halls and schools a bench is almost always a worthwhile investment, while in a small office cloakroom with infrequent use, it may not be essential.
  8. Bespoke projects and non-standard solutions. If the dimensions or configurations of the standard models don’t match the specifics of your space – for example, if you need a non-standard height, depth or a particular colour scheme – VVN’s specialists can prepare a tailored proposal that takes into account the layout of your specific space and the needs of its users. This is particularly relevant for large facilities – sports complexes, factories, or government and municipal institutions – where standard solutions don’t always make the best use of the available floor space.

In practice, the optimal solution is most often a combination – for example, most of the changing room fitted with leg-mounted lockers for easier cleaning, with a separate area featuring clean/dirty clothing division for staff whose duties require it, and the whole space complemented with benches in the main circulation areas.
