The European standard EN 1729 sets out requirements for school furniture to ensure it is safe and ergonomically suited to the stature of children and young people. The standard divides furniture into seven size groups (1 to 7), each corresponding to a particular height range – the smallest group, for example, is intended for pre-school children, while the largest is for secondary school pupils and adults.
A colour marking on the leg of a desk or chair usually indicates which size group the item belongs to, making it easier for teachers and procurement specialists to choose the correct size. Correct desk and chair height matters because incorrect sizing can contribute to posture problems, back pain and difficulty concentrating during long periods of sitting.
